Way back in November I had the thrilling experience of meeting one of my idols: Amy Butler. She held 2 of her color workshops in Los Angeles, and I about wet my pants when I found out. Of course I signed up the moment I heard. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint.
First, let's start off by saying that Amy is a color genious, so spending 5 minutes talking with her about her color inspirations is gold. But a whole day? Oh, baby. It was heaven. The even better part? In person, not only is Amy inspiring, but also incredibly kind, warm and generous. I've admired her for so, so long and now I admire her even more. She's the type of person that you can immediately see yourself sharing a glass of wine with. (Amy, if you're reading this, I would totally share a glass of wine with you the next time you're in LA. Is that creepy? No? Great! Call me!)
As for the workshop itself? As you can see from these photos it was an explosion of colors, textures, images and fabric. And it felt so damn good to just immerse ourselves in it. Time flew by. The room was filled with joy. In this age of online inspiration and pinterest- which I do love- spending the day letting your fingers and heart make creative choices felt incredibly refreshing. There is something intuitive that comes out of us when we leave the computer screens behind and let our bodies, minds and creative spirits communicate with each other.
Amy's words of wisdom that stuck with me the most: when we make color palettes this way, They're instant classics. They come from inside of us and they will never go out of style. We can revist them over and over again. What beautiful insight.
This post would not be complete though without mentioning the generous host: The French General. People- this store is amazeballs. I was instantly mad and glad I didn't know about it before. Glad only because my wallet would be crying. This space is jam packed with every kind of button, bauble, ribbon, vintage do-dad and ephemera you can imagine. It's a treasure trove of unique finds just begging to be discovered. If you live in LA, go! (They host lost of other workshops too.) If you don't, put it on your list of shops to visit the next time you're in town. You won't be disappointed.
The new color combinations I discovered that day have already started to sneak their way into my designs, and I can say that these new palettes feel so very "me." If Amy comes to your town, don't hesitate- sign up and get ready for a simply lovely, intimate, creative, playful day.
